How are new climate extreme outlooks helping sugarcane farmers and the agricultural industry?
Hear from Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries Senior Project Officer Tom Bowditch and Tweed Rivers sugarcane farmer Robert Quirk and about their experience using the tools.
Robert says the tools provide additional information and support his medium- and longer-term strategic planning.
Tom has used products to plan activities around forecast dry and wet weather periods as part of a biosecurity project to eradicate red witchweed.
Development of the tools through FWFA project has involved the broader agricultural community in testing and refining the tools to ensure they provide useful information.
The extreme climate tools have been developed as part of the Forewarned is Forearmed (FWFA) project. The five-year project (2017–2022) is supported by funding from the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment as part of its Rural R&D for Profit program, in partnership with 14 project partners including SRA. The project is managed by Meat & Livestock Australia. SRA acknowledges co-funding from the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries for this research activity.
