Flooding continues for New South Wales and Queensland with weather conditions expected to continue easing

10/03/2022

Current as at 4:00PM AEDT on Thursday 10 March 2022

Flood impacts are set to continue across New South Wales and south-east Queensland today.

Severe thunderstorms and associated heavy rainfall are possible west of the ranges bordering Queensland this afternoon or evening. Along the New South Wales coast, weather conditions are expected to continue easing. Recent rainfall has saturated soils and caused rivers to swell, so severe thunderstorms and persistent showers may lead to renewed flash flooding and riverine rises over the weekend and into next week.

In Queensland, northern, eastern, and south-eastern parts are likely to see showers and thunderstorms today. Severe thunderstorms are possible in the east and south-east, moving further north on Friday, then into south-west Queensland on the weekend.

The focus of the rainfall in Queensland will likely move north along the east coast over the next few days with a south-easterly wind surge, reaching the North Tropical Coast on the weekend with moderate to locally heavy rainfall forecast. The change will ease heatwave conditions in the north. The wet south-easterly change is forecast to reach the Townsville coast on Friday and the North Tropical coast on Saturday.

Multiple flood warnings remain in New South Wales and Queensland. In New South Wales, major levels are current for the Hawksbury Nepean catchment and Wollombi Brook in the east, and the Barwon River over the northern interior. In Queensland, major flood warnings remain current for the southern interior.

Surf and swell conditions are expected to be hazardous today for coastal activities such as rock fishing, boating, and swimming. A hazardous surf warning is current for much of the NSW coast. Southerly facing beaches could see coastal erosion due to the increased swell. Conditions are expected to ease overnight or early Friday.

Communities are encouraged to keep up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings on the Bureau's website and BOM Weather app and to follow the advice of emergency services.
